Autumn 2020: A Mood Board
One of my favorite things about keeping a personal style blog is being able to go back in time and see just how much my sense of style has evolved over the years. My instagram page and this site (formerly Pointe Shoes & Prada) dates back to 2014 when I was a sophomore in high school, rife with moody teen angst (thanks Lana del Rey) and swore that Brandy Melville was the pinnacle of cool street style. Thank goodness for growth.
As I grow older, I find that my style is maturing and is becoming more timeless with each new acquisition. I’m no longer interested in buying trendy, fast fashion pieces that are harmful to the environment and won’t withstand the test of time. These days, I’m looking for pieces that can easily be added to my current wardrobe. It’s like creating a conversation between your items: you want the pieces to communicate well with one another and for the through-line to be coherent.
Trends are fun to experiment with but when it comes to making an investment in a trendy item, I find myself very reluctant to indulge immediately. Overtime, I’ve gotten a lot better at discerning what trends lend themselves to my existing wardrobe and which are just hype. I can’t tell you how many trendy items I purchased from places like Forever 21 and H&M when I was in high school that I’ve given away after only a few wears. Not only is it wasteful but it also detracts from the integrity of your unique style.
Now that I know the essence of my style, I don’t get caught up in the trend trap.
One practice that helps me hone in on my style aesthetic is creating collages. Compiling photos of outfits that I admire helps me to keep inspiration fresh and organized in one place.
This Autumn 2020 collage is based on simple, functional street style with interesting touches to create a more seasoned look. I’m finding myself being drawn to darker hues on top and lighter colors on the bottom like the dark jacket and light-wash denim combinations featured in the collage. Since I’m only leaving my apartment to go to work or get groceries, functionality is key.
