How to Serve Looks in the Cold

I know you don’t want to hear it, but I’m here to keep it real with you. Yes, you. It’s time to stop using the winter season as an excuse to wear boring outfits. Winter can be a great time to experiment and be creative with your style if you know how to dress for the weather.

My number one tip for staying warm in the winter is to layer like nobody’s business. Not only does layering keep the shivers at bay, it also allows you to adjust throughout the day in accordance with the temperature. The key to layering is to play with different textures and proportions. If you’re wearing a big sweater on top, try a slimming pair of jeans on the bottom to balance it out. If you’d rather opt for loose fitting trousers, pair them with a fitted turtleneck and structured blazer to add contrast. Combining different shapes and fabrics will not only make for a cool, eclectic look, it’ll also combat the cold.

My second tip for dressing for winter weather is to focus on your underwear just as much a your outerwear. To create a cute and cozy look underneath my big coats and jackets, I choose big, chunky knits and relaxed-fit jeans. This allows for some breathability once you reach your (hopefully) heated destination and gives you some room to layer underneath. A tight-fitting, long-sleeved top and a quality pair of leggings are my go-to’s on colder days. These pieces keep will you insulated without adding any bulk.

Finally, when I absolutely cannot handle putting on real clothes but still want to look put-together, I throw on a loungewear set. This trend is one that I can most definitely get on board with. A matching knitwear set is effortlessly chic, simple to style and easy to find in most trend-oriented retailers such as Zara and Mango. Matching sweatsuits can be found nearly anywhere and can look extremely trendy if you add the right accessories. If you’re in need of loungewear inspiration look no further than instagram. Influencers like @lefevrediary, @aimeesong, @mvb and @nycbambi have it down to a science and often pair their knitwear sets with chunky boots or Dad sneakers.

I hope these tips have given you some food for thought or maybe even inspired you to be more creative with your winter style. I’m in the process of putting some looks together for winter outerwear post so stay tuned for more winter style inspiration.
