I Wish I Were Wearing: Bright Hues for Spring

From perusing my favorite personal style accounts on Instagram to reading fashion trend reports, it’s clear that bright colors are are all the rage for spring. Fashion bloggers, designers and street style mavens (all of which I group into the category of “Fashion People”) having been sporting vibrant and unexpected hues.

While I do believe that trends are arbitrary and am a strong proponent of investing in timeless, well-crafted pieces that will serve your personal wardrobe for years to come, I thought it might be fun to use what I have here at home to get a little trendy. That’s all to say, don’t come for me for being trendy for a hot second, okay? Okay, cool. Let’s continue.

I will admit, styling multiple colors in the same outfit can be a daunting endeavor. It isn’t always easy to form a chic, put-together look with a rainbow of different hues. Trust me, there certainly have been times when I’ve put on an outfit and felt like a highlighter. But isn’t that the fun of fashion? To look semi-ridiculous and enjoy every minute of it? Well, I think so.

For this look, the yellow does the talking. Yellow is a color that I don’t wear often, but when I do, it’s a whole event. The unapologetic vibrance that yellow exudes is perfect for days that are gray and dreary. This gorgeous, mustard-yellow cardigan is borrowed from my mother’s closet. It’s from J. Crew and is 100% cashmere. It’s soft on the skin and light enough for spring weather. And I mean just look at that color.

I paired my cardigan with a pair of baby blue corduroys from Rolla’s Jeans to fully commit to a pastel theme. These corduroys have a cropped-flare fit which elongate the line of my leg and add a fun and unexpected twist to the look. They also make my booty look great so bonus points for that.

My white tank from The Line by K and white cat-eye sunglasses provide the neutral element that anchor the outfit, keeping it classic and chic. That’s my trick to styling bright colors; neutral colors will add the necessary contrast to make the the outfit cohesive.

For accessories, I continued my pastel theme. My pink wedges and yellow handbag are an unlikely pairing but complement each other well in the context of this look. I enjoy wearing statement pieces together to draw the eye to different parts of an outfit. It’s like finding different focal points in a piece of artwork. Each aspect is so intriguing that it could stand on its own but, when existing together in the same body of work, they draw each other out.
