Morganification x The Vintage Twin
Before moving to New York City, thrifting was something that seemed cool in theory but tricky in practice. Before Second Chic, a well-curated consignment shop on Elmwood Ave, I didn’t know of any good thrifting spots in Buffalo. I loved the idea of purchasing quality, preloved items but didn’t know how to thrift properly. I didn’t yet know the tips and tricks that I later garnered once I began thrifting in New York.
Vintage shopping and thrifting in New York is a sport. It consists of rules, strategy and there are clear winners and losers. I’ve learned the hard way what items make for good a thrift. For example, I prefer to buy my basics new and find that accessories and statement items are great to purchase second-hand. It really comes down to quality, wearability and how much you’re willing to pay.
Recently, The Vintage Twin, a thrift shop in New York with a location SoHo, reached out to me and was kind enough to send me a free item. I regularly pass by the shop and have wandered in a few times but came out empty handed. Their price point is a little high in my opinion but they have a great selection of vintage Levi’s if you’re willing to splurge.
I chose a Champion tie-dye crewneck sweatshirt as my gifted item. It’s a very summery piece, great for chilly nights by a bonfire or a windy day on the beach.
For this look, I was inspired by A Different World, the latest TV show that I’m bingeing. Each of the characters have such great style; it’s a great show to watch for iconic 90s fashion inspiration. This particular look is inspired by Whitley Gilbert. She’s a haughty southern belle who is always getting into other people’s business, played by Jasmine Guy.
Whitley has a very preppy sense of style and wears a lot pastels. I decided to style a more sporty look that incorporates a trendy 90s silhouette with the high-waisted mom shorts and crewneck. To make the sweatshirt cropped, I cinched the bottom with an elastic hip-alignment belt (repurposing old ballet accessories is truly a great hobby), and tucked it underneath itself.

To finish off the look, I added some simple silver accessories and a pair of white sunglasses. The 90s, suburban mom vibe is in full force with this one. I dig it.
